The Angénieux 10×25 25-250mm is one of the earliest generation cinema zooms, and it carries a very distinct character. The image is softer than modern lenses, with reduced contrast due to the original coatings, resulting in a flattering and slightly diffused look.

Those coatings also create very specific flares, often shifting into magenta and amber tones depending on the light. Combined with a subtle spherical aberration, the bokeh becomes more expressive and less controlled, giving the image a quality that feels hard to replicate with modern optics.

Despite its age, the lens holds a surprising amount of sharpness. It never feels clinical, but it delivers enough resolution to sit comfortably within contemporary workflows while still maintaining a strong vintage identity.

The 10x zoom range makes it extremely versatile. It allows you to move from wide to long focal lengths within a single shot, without breaking the visual consistency. This makes it particularly interesting for documentary-style shooting or situations where speed and flexibility are key. Originally designed for Academy 35mm, the lens covers a slightly smaller image circle than Super 35. With expanders, however, it can be adapted to work with a wide range of modern sensors.
