The Cooke Classic Panchro/i FF set brings the original Panchro look into a modern full-frame format. Based on the classic optical designs, the lenses have been reworked to cover today’s sensors while maintaining their distinctive character.
The image is soft in a very specific way. Skin tones feel warm and natural, contrast is lowered without becoming flat. Highlights roll off gently, never clipping abruptly, while shadows retain a certain depth. Wide open, there’s a subtle glow that gives the image a fragile, almost tactile quality, without losing overall sharpness. The lenses react strongly to light. Backlight introduces soft flares and a drop in contrast, which can be used deliberately to break the image or create a sense of atmosphere. Stopped down, they become more controlled, but the character remains.
Compared to more modern, clinical lenses, the Panchros feel less “perfect.” That’s exactly where they become interesting. They take the edge off digital sensors and create an image that feels closer to film, without becoming nostalgic.
They pair very well with the Cooke SP3 lenses. While the SP3s are slightly cleaner and more controlled, both sets share the same underlying Cooke rendering of skin tones and color. This makes it easy to mix them within a project using the Panchros for a softer, more fragile look and the SP3s when a bit more precision or contrast is needed, without the images falling apart.
With Cooke’s /i technology, lens metadata can be read out directly, making them suitable for more complex workflows.
