Atlas Lens Co. has developed a unique set of small anamorphic lenses with the Mercury series. They cover full-frame sensors with a 1.5x squeeze. They are extremely compact and lightweight, more or less the size of Kowa Anamorphics.
The optics exude a timeless anamorphic essence: showcasing barrel distortion, a gentle linear decline in focus, oval-shaped bokeh, and stunning lens flares. The Mercury lenses exhibit characteristic anamorphic lens flares that take on the color of the light source. Despite their propensity for flaring, they demonstrate superior performance in handling backlighting and overexposed windows compared to older anamorphic lenses. Chromatic aberration is remarkably well managed. Focus breathing is moderate with the 36mm and 42mm options, while commendably controlled with the 72mm variant.
With the 1.5x squeeze ratio, they are flexible for sensors of any size or aspect ratio. The housings have standard 95mm fronts, and close focus is very good for anamorphic lenses, with smooth and precise mechanics. The 1.5x squeeze factor makes them highly adaptable for sensors of nearly any size or aspect ratio, allowing minimal cropping almost regardless of the sensor shape or size you are working with.
